The Philadelphia Eagles made the first-ever NFL Draft pick in history, but how have they fared in the first round since then? After having the two first overall picks in 1936 and 1937, have they selected first overall since? Let’s take a look back at the decidedly mixed history of Eagles first-round NFL Draft picks.

Philadelphia Eagles first-round draft picks in history

The mixed nature of the Eagles’ fortunes in the first round is highlighted by their initial five first-round picks. In 1936, they selected Jay Berwanger, who never played a single NFL game in his career. The story was somewhat similar in 1937 when they selected Sam Francis. The Eagles then traded Francis to the Chicago Bears before he even played a game for the franchise. The Eagles have never selected first overall since those first two drafts.

The same situation occurred in 1938 with Jim McDonald, and it wasn’t until the 1939 NFL Draft that the Eagles’ pick would suit up for the franchise. However, their 1940 first-round pick, George McAfee, would go on to be the first Eagles’ first-round pick enshrined in the Hall of Fame. Philadelphia would have three more first-round picks inducted into the Hall of Fame. However, they have not had a first-round pick go to Canton since Bob Brown in 1964.
